📰 What’s Happening?

  • The RSPCA has removed all meat and plant-based recipes from its website following an investigation revealing animal cruelty at RSPCA Assured farms.

  • The investigation by Animal Rising found 280 legal breaches and 94 welfare breaches, prompting the RSPCA to review its recipe content and messaging.

  • Despite the removal of recipes, the RSPCA continues to promote "higher welfare" animal products, facing criticism from animal rights groups urging a shift towards plant-based food systems.

  • UK plant-based meat startup THIS secured £20M in Series C funding led by Planet First Partners to expand its product range and drive profitability.

  • The investment will help THIS launch new health-focused plant-based meat products and accelerate growth in the UK market.

  • The funding round follows a year of rapid expansion, with THIS aiming to become a sustainable business and the third-largest meat analogue brand in the UK.

  • Vegan chef Alexis Gauthier has relocated his plant-based restaurant 123V from Fenwick's to Browns Brook Street in Mayfair, offering an evolved menu featuring plant-based sushi and new dishes like Thai-style summer rolls and garden bowls.

  • The new location, designed by Red Deer studio, includes a courtyard dining area with fern gardens and trees, and a small front terrace, making it a hidden oasis in central London.

  • The menu is complemented by an all-vegan wine list curated by Gauthier Soho sommelier David Havlik, enhancing the luxurious and innovative plant-based dining experience.

  • A new study from Imperial College London and the University of São Paulo suggests that consuming more ultra-processed plant-based foods (UPF) can increase the risk of cardiovascular disease and death, while whole plant-based foods lower these risks.

  • The study emphasises that not all vegan diets are equally healthy, and plant-based diets are most beneficial when they predominantly include wholefoods like legumes and vegetables.

  • Media coverage has sometimes misleadingly portrayed the study as condemning veganism, but the real takeaway is to focus on less processed foods for heart health.

🎬 Watch & Learn

Another week, another disappointing celebrity. This time it's the actor and comedian Hannah Einbinder, whose justification for no longer being vegan is astonishingly ill-thought out and illogical. But, beyond Hannah's bad argument, in today's video I also address the jaw-dropping reaction from the audience.

🧑‍🍳 What’s Cooking?

While it feels like there’s plenty ready made options for plant-based meat burgers, sausages and chicken alternatives, fish and seafood alternatives are definitely not as readily available. Thankfully there’s lots of great homemade vegan fish recipes! Here’s a few to try out:

Easy Vegan Tuna This Vegan Tuna is a tasty and easy plant-based alternative that's ready in just 10 minutes. With a fishy flavor and texture like real tuna, it's perfect for a vegan tuna salad sandwich and more!

Beer Battered Vegan Fried Fish This is the best Beer Battered Vegan Fried Fish! Made from hearts of palm, Old Bay seasoning, and a rich beer batter, the tender fried “fish” is best served with tartar sauce and fries. Just like authentic fish and chips, but better!

Vegan Fish Fillets These fish, or should I say feesh fillets, have super tender and flaky “flesh” and crispy skin! It’s high-protein (26g per serving!) and takes just 15 minutes to prepare! It’s one of the closest fish alternatives I have ever tried!
